The

Challenge

I was tasked with reimagining the full experience—optimizing clarity, speed, and usability for both novice and expert players. This included designing Dark Mode for the BeatBuddy Manager (BBMO) software and enhancing the pedal interface to allow musicians to:

  • Track song parts, measures, and beats

  • Use specialty functions like autopilot and velocity control

  • View drum set, tempo, and audio settings at a glance

  • Navigate folders hands-free

—all within a compact 2.2" screen, built for quick scanning from 6 feet away during live performances.

Process & Approach

To kick things off, I met with the CEO and project manager to align on goals and priorities. I then immersed myself in the product by reading the full BeatBuddy manual and hands-on testing with the original version to fully understand the existing user experience.

After reviewing the technical requirements and engineering constraints, I developed three initial concepts for the main screen UI. We selected one direction to move forward with, then refined it through multiple rounds of iteration — adjusting contrast, typography, and element sizing for clarity and usability. From there, I expanded the interface to include additional screens for settings, folders, and info views, designed custom icons for a consistent visual system, and created a Dark Mode for BeatBuddy Manager Online.

  • Original BeatBuddy Model

  • Early concepts for main play screen elements.

  • Sample of elements that make up the play screens

Design Solutions

The redesigned interface takes full advantage of the new 2.2" display and encoder-based navigation. It clearly surfaces essential information like song parts, transitions, drum kits, and tempo—while making advanced features like AutoPilot and velocity control easier to access and understand.

Designed for hands-free operation and quick glances from a distance, these updated screens bring clarity and control to live performance.

The Dark Mode for BeatBuddy Manager Online, ensures the software’s aesthetic aligns seamlessly with the new updates.
